The Class of 2026 truly outdid themselves, hosting a South Harrison Jr./Sr. Prom that will be remembered for years to come.
Last year, the Class of 2025 made history by hosting the very first South Harrison Prom at The VeNue, a stunning 10,000 sq. ft. event space newly opened in Bethany. It was an unforgettable night that set a new standard for what prom could be. This year, the juniors followed in their footsteps with pride, honoring the tradition the seniors began and carrying it forward with their own creative spin. Their dedication and passion ensured that the magic of prom not only continued but thrived, becoming a cherished experience for all who attended.
Behind graduation, prom stands as South Harrison’s second-largest school event, and this year’s was a standout in every way. Nearly 100 juniors and seniors danced the night away, joined by 25 underclassmen and almost 30 alumni or out-of-town guests.
Prom isn’t just a dance, it’s a year-long effort, one that this Junior class took seriously. From a cornhole tournament/silent auction, to a youth basketball shootout, raffles, and working concession stands, the Class of 2026 hustled to raise the necessary funds. They not only covered the cost of prom but also banked funds for senior year.
“What a grand event to happen in our town, and to be pulled off by a bunch of teenagers is amazing!” said Tory Watson, SH Junior Class Sponsor and Junior parent. “They have worked so hard all year and had the best support system from so many! Watching them have such a great time eating, dancing, and being with each other, made everything worth it!”
This year’s theme, Enchanted Seas, transformed The VeNue into an enchanting ocean escape. Walls were washed in shades of blue, while floating jellyfish, shimmering bubbles, and sea-inspired lighting brought the aquatic fantasy to life. A breathtaking coral reef photo backdrop, crafted by Mr. Frame, the Art Department, and a mix of upper and lower classmen, set the stage for photos and unforgettable memories. The creativity and detail were evident in every corner.
Amy Hess, SH teacher and volunteer chaperone, noted, “The theme turned out elegantly and you could tell how hard everyone had worked to make it great. The dance was fun with all the kids participating, either on the dance floor or posing for the 360 camera.”
For the first time, the juniors offered a meal option for purchase, catered by local favorite Huffman’s BBQ. Four underclassmen, alongside the Huffmans, served 120 plates, giving prom-goers the perfect fuel before hitting the dance floor. The energy of the night was electric, thanks to DJ Hydan, a high-energy professional from Kansas City known for spinning at Chiefs, Royals, and Sporting KC events. His presence brought a next-level experience, keeping students hyped and dancing late into the night.
“Prom was very well put together this year. The DJ was amazing and the energy was high all night. Everyone I talked to had an amazing time,” said Hayden Cox, Senior Class President.
Maverick Shaffer, Student Council Treasurer, agreed, “Prom was amazing this year! I am so thankful for all of the juniors, their parents, and the junior class sponsors. The food was amazing, along with the DJ. This will be one to remember!”
Once the main event ended, the night was far from over. South Harrison’s tradition of After Prom, funded and hosted by the Junior Class parents, provided students with a fun and safe environment to keep celebrating. Entertainment, games, food, and prizes filled the after-hours. Parents partnered with local businesses and individuals to make the event unforgettable while ensuring everyone made it home safely. Their dedication was a perfect companion to the juniors’ leadership.
Perhaps the most touching part of the night wasn’t the décor or the dancing—but the overwhelming sense of community. Lexi Hunter, Class of 2026 Treasurer, captured that feeling:
“I made so many amazing memories at prom this year, but one moment that truly stood out to me was seeing how much support we received from our community. It was incredibly moving to look out and see a crowd filled with familiar faces, friends, neighbors, teachers, and even people I had never met before, all coming together to celebrate with us. It reminded me how special our small town is... The kind of community spirit we have is something I will forever be grateful for.”
And for the students, all the hard work paid off. “This was the best prom ever! The dance was so much fun and I had the time of my life dancing with my friends all night!” shared Lucy Rainey, Class of 2026 Secretary.
Thanks to the foundation laid by the Class of 2025 and the passionate follow-through from the Class of 2026, South Harrison’s Prom is now more than a school tradition, it’s a community legacy. With hard work, creativity, and unwavering support, the juniors created a night students will carry with them for years to come.
